Mix food coloring and cocoa and set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and coloring paste mix and beat 10 minutes. Add buttermilk, then slowly add flour, salt and vanilla.
Mix in by hand soda and vinegar.
Bake at 350Β° for 30 to 35 minutes in greased and floured pans.
