Red Velvet Cake
Red Velvet Cake is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1/2 c. shortening, 2 eggs, 1 1/2 c. sugar, 2 oz. red food coloring and 2 tsp. cocoa, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A comforting dish that warms the soul.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs, beating well.
In a cup, mix into a paste the coloring and cocoa; add to ingredients and add vanilla.
Pour buttermilk into cup used to make paste, stirring to get all the coloring.
Sift flour and salt, and alternating with buttermilk, add to batter.
Beat well and fold in soda, then vinegar.
Bake at 300° to 325° for 20 to 30 minutes or until done. Makes 2 layers.
