Pour boiling water over pitted prunes and dissolve the soda in this and let stand for a while.

Mix the shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla.

Add sifted dry ingredients to shortening mixture alternately with liquid drained from prunes.

Add 2/3 cup coarsely chopped walnuts and prunes.

Bake at 300Β° for 1 hour.

Let stand overnight before slicing.

Slice very thin and serve with butter.
