Combine sugar and water in a saucepan.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves; set aside.
Melt margarine in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish in a 350° oven.
Set aside.
Cut shortening into flour.
Add milk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly for 4 to 5 times.
Roll into a 12 x 9-inch rectangle.
Spread sliced fruit over dough.
Roll up jellyroll fashion, beginning with long side.
Cut dough into 12 (1-inch) slices.
Place slices in butter.
Pour syrup over slices; bake at 350° for 55 to 60 minutes or until golden.
