Bring water and sugar to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.
Simmer 15 minutes.
Cool.
Add lemon juice and rum or brandy (or some of both).
Pour into a large container with cover. Add fruit to the syrup, making sure that the fruit is submerged. Refrigerate, replenishing as needed.
