Use a butter loaf pan. 9 x 9 x 3 inches.
Heat sugar, milk, brown sugar, corn syrup and salt in a 3 quart pan on medium heat, stirring constantly until sugars are dissolved.
Cook stirring occasionally to 234° on candy thermometer.
Remove from heat and add margarine.
Cool without stirring to 120° (bottom of pan will be lukewarm).
Add vanilla, beat continually with wooden spoon until candy is thick and no longer glossy, 5-10 minutes.
Mixture will hold its shape when dropped from spoon.
Quickly stir into loaf pan.
Cut into about 1 inch squares.
