Mile-High Biscuits

Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt into a bowl.
Cut in shortening until crumbly.
Combine egg and milk; add to flour mixture, all at one time.
Stir with fork to make a soft dough.
Turn onto floured surface; knead lightly 15 times.
Roll to 1-inch thick.
Cut with 2-inch cutter.
Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 450Β° for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
