Cream together shortening, sugar and egg yolks.
Sift dry ingredients three times.
Beat egg whites stiff and set aside.
Add milk and flour mixture alternately to egg yolk/sugar mixture. Add vanilla.

Spread batter in 9 x 9-inch greased pan and sprinkle lightly with sugar. Bake at 350Β° for 35 to 45 minutes.
