Sift together the corn meal, flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.
Beat egg.
Add milk; add to first mixture.
Add shortening.
Pour into hot, greased 10-inch skillet or pan, muffin pan or corn stick pan.
Bake at 375° to 400° for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Yields 6 servings.
