German Chocolate Brownies
German chocolate brownies sandwich melted caramel and chocolate chips between layers of dense cake-mix brownie dough, then finish with a snowy powdered sugar dusting.
Melt 1/3 cup evaporated milk with the caramels in a double boiler until smooth.
Mix the cake mix with melted margarine, the remaining evaporated milk, and salt to make a thick dough.
Press half the dough into a buttered 9 by 13-inch pan and bake at 350Β°F for 6 minutes.
Scatter chocolate chips over the hot base, pour on the caramel, and drop the remaining dough over the top.
Bake about 15 minutes longer, cool completely, and dust with powdered sugar before cutting.
