French Onion Bread
French Onion Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 pkg. active dry yeast, 4 tbsp. sugar, 1 envelope instant dry onion soup mix, 3 tbsp. shortening and 2 1/4 c. warm water, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Perfect for family dinners and special occasions.
Mix yeast, sugar and 2 cups flour.
Mix one of the cups of water heated to hot with soup mix.
Let stand until cool; add rest of water.
Stir in the shortening until melted.
Add to this the flour mixture.
Beat 2 minutes, adding gradually about 3 1/2 cups flour or until very stiff dough.
Knead until smooth.
Put in a greased bowl; turn to grease top.
Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 30 minutes.
