French Bread
French Bread is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 5 1/2 to 6 c. bread flour, 2 pkg. active dry yeast, 2 tsp. salt, 2 c. warm water (115~ to 120~) and 1 slightly beaten egg white, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. A crowd-pleaser that never disappoints.
In large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups bread flour, yeast and salt.
Add warm water and beat at low speed 30 seconds with mixer beaters.
Scrape bowl constantly.
Then beat at high speed 3 minutes.
Stir in as much flour as possible using a wooden spoon to make a stiff dough that is smooth and elastic.
Knead on floured surface by hand 5 to 10 minutes.
Shape in a ball.
Place in lightly greased bowl.
Turn to grease surface.
Cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk (1 to 1 1/2 hours).
Punch down and turn on lightly floured surface.
