Combine sugar, shortening, flour, cocoa, salt, premixed water and food coloring and 2/3 cup of buttermilk, saving 1/3 cup.
Beat until well blended.
Add eggs, remainder of buttermilk and vanilla.
Beat 1 minute.
Mix vinegar and soda in a cup; stir into batter by hand.
Do not beat.
Pour into two 9-inch greased cake pans.
Bake for 30 minutes at 350Β°.
