Sift sugar, flour and salt.
In a saucepan, bring Crisco, butter, water and cocoa to a boil.
Pour over flour mixture while still hot.
Add buttermilk, beaten eggs, soda and vanilla; don't overbeat.
Bake in well-greased cookie sheet pan with sides, two 8 x 8-inch cake pans or a 9 x 13-inch casserole pan.
Bake at 375Β° for 20 minutes.
While cake is baking, make icing.
