Add soda to dates.
Add water and let cool.
Cream sugar and butter.
Beat in eggs and the date mixture.
Add flour, cocoa, salt, vanilla and 1/2 package chocolate chips.
Pour this batter in a cake pan and sprinkle 1/2 cup nuts and 1/2 package of chocolate chips over the top.
Bake in a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan for 35 minutes in a 350Β° oven.
