Mix dates, soda and hot water; let stand.
Mix 1 cup sugar, shortening, eggs, flour and salt.
Add to date mixture.
Mix well and put into an 8 x 12-inch pan.
Mix chocolate chips, 1/2 cup sugar and nuts; put on top of cake mix.
Bake for 35 minutes at 350Β°.
