Sift together dry ingredients into mixing bowl.
Add butter, shortening, vanilla and 3/4 cup buttermilk.
Beat for 2 minutes at medium speed on electric mixer.
Add remaining buttermilk and egg whites.
Beat 2 minutes more.
Bake in two greased and floured 9 x 1 1/2-inch round pans at 350Β° for 25 to 30 minutes.
Cool for 10 minutes.
Remove from pans.
