Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla
Sift flour and salt together and stir into batter
Roll into 1-inch balls and dip into slightly beaten egg white
Roll into chopped nuts and place on ungreased cookie sheet
Bake 5 minutes at 375Β°
Remove and press thumb on top of each cookie
Return and bake 8 minutes
Place jelly or icing in thumbprint.
