Sweet Pickles
Sweet Pickles is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 2 gal. sliced cucumbers, 2 c. canning salt, 1 bottle alum powder, 4 qt. sugar and 2 1/2 qt. vinegar, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Simple to make and full of bold, satisfying flavors.
Put sliced cucumbers in jugs.
Boil 1 gallon of water and salt; pour over cucumbers.
Let set for 1 week.
Pour off water. Add 1 gallon of boiling water and alum powder.
Pour over cucumbers; let set 24 hours.
Drain and rinse.
Add 1 gallon of plain boiling water to cucumbers.
Let set overnight.
Add together the sugar, vinegar and pickling spice; boil together. Pour over cucumbers in jug.
Let set for 3 days.
Drain and save vinegar.
Pack cucumbers in jars.
Heat vinegar and pour over cucumbers and seal.
