Sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and shortening.
Mix thoroughly with fork.
Add milk to beaten egg and add slowly to make soft dough.
Drop by tablespoon on greased cookie sheet for individual shortcakes or put in a 9-inch round cake pan.
Bake in hot oven (400° to 425°) for 10 to 12 minutes for individual, longer for cake pan.
