Southern Spoon Read is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 teacup cornmeal, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 tbsp. shortening, 1 egg and 1 1/2 teacups boiling water, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Bursting with flavor in every bite.

Mix salt and cornmeal; add shortening.
Pour boiling water over and mix well.
Break egg into hot mixture and mix well; add milk into which baking powder has been mixed.
Mix all well and pour into greased baking dish.
Bake about 30 minutes at 400Β°; serve with lots of butter.
Serves 4 to 6.
