Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar into bowl. Add milk and shortening to make soft dough.
Turn onto lightly floured board and roll or pat to 1/2-inch thickness.

Make a lengthwise slit in center of each strip. Fry in deep hot fat, 375Β°, about 2 minutes total time, tearing once.
Drain on paper towels.
