Mix first 6 ingredients together with your hands or a pastry cutter until blended, but not oily.
Divide the crumbs into two parts.
Stir into one half of the crumbs the following ingredients which have been combined and beaten: soda, egg and buttermilk or sour milk.
Place the batter in a deep, greased, ovenproof 9-inch pie plate.
