Cream shortening and sugar together.
Add eggs and beat well. Make paste with cocoa and food coloring; add to cream mixture. Mix salt, vanilla and buttermilk and add alternately with flour to creamed mixture.
Mix soda and vinegar and fold into the mixture. Bake at 350Β° for 30 minutes in 2 (9-inch) layer pans, greased and floured.
