Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs and beat.
Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa and add to creamed mixture.
Add buttermilk alternately with sifted flour and salt.
Add vanilla. Mix soda and vinegar, then add to mixture, blending only.
Bake around 30 minutes at 350Β° in 2 (8 or 9-inch) pans greased and floured.
Cool on rack.
Split layers in two to make 4 layers.
