Combine baking soda with buttermilk.
Put sugar, buttermilk and margarine in a large pot.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it changes color and forms a lump when dropped in cold water.
Take off heat.
Add 3 cups broken nuts, vanilla and maple syrup.
Fold continually (slowly, about 190 strokes).
Drop on wax paper over a thickness of newspaper.
Makes 80 or so pieces.
