Preheat oven to 425Β°.

Using 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine grease a heavy 8-inch skillet.

Peel potatoes.

Cut potatoes crosswise into thin slices.

Put potatoes in a large bowl and toss gently with salt and pepper.

Arrange in layers covering with butter.

Place skillet over medium-high heat and cook 3 minutes to brown the bottom of potatoes.

Remove from heat and cover with foil.

Press down firmly with 9-inch Pyrex dish.

Place skillet and dish in center of rack in oven.

Bake 30 minutes. Remove Pyrex dish and foil; bake 5 more minutes.

Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
