Preheat oven to 325°.
Blend shortening and 1/2 cup brown sugar.
Add 1 cup flour and salt.
Stir in milk.
Pat evenly in a greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
Bake at 325° for about 20 minutes or until light brown.
Beat eggs; add 1 cup brown sugar and vanilla. Beat until thick.
Stir remaining ingredients.
Pour onto mixture in pan.
Bake at 325° for 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool.
Frost and garnish with cherries, if desired.
Cut into squares.
