Mother's Applesauce Cake

Cream sugar, shortening and applesauce.
(Mother cooked tart apples like Granny Smiths.)
Sift flour and spices.
Add to sugar mixture and stir well (save about 1/2 cup to dredge raisins and nuts).
Add raisins to mixture.
Add cherries and 1/4 cup cherry juice to batter.
Pour into well-greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
Bake at 325Β° for 75 minutes.
