Kentucky Cream Cake

Cream shortening and margarine with sugar.
Add egg yolks, one at a time.
Beat well. Add flour and baking soda alternately with buttermilk.
Add vanilla, coconut and nuts; fold in beaten egg whites.
Bake in two or three 8 x 8 x 2-inch layers at 350Β° for 35 to 40 minutes.
