Layer sliced potatoes in a greased 9 x 12-inch or other appropriate baking dish (preferably not metal).
Place enough potatoes in dish to fill to top.
Sprinkle instant onion soup mix over top of potatoes.
Drizzle butter over top and bake in 350Β° oven for 40 minutes.
