Cream sugar and shortening.
Add eggs, one at a time; mix well.
Add soda to buttermilk.
Let stand until it foams.
Mix dry ingredients.
Add one cup at a time to other mixture and beat. Add buttermilk, a little at a time, then fold in the jam last. Bake at 350Β° for 35 minutes.
Makes a very large cake.
