Jam Cake

Cream the butter and sugar. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each. Add soda to buttermilk and spices to flour. Add flour mixture and buttermilk mixture, then mix with other mixture. Mix in raisins and nuts.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Pour into 4 well-greased cake pans. Bake at 325Β° for 40 minutes. Cool before icing.
