Combine buttermilk and soda and let stand for a few minutes. Cream together sugar, margarine, and shortening.
Add egg yolks one at a time.
Add flour alternately with buttermilk mixture.
Fold in vanilla, eggs whites, pecans and coconut.
Bake at 325 degrees for approximately 25-30 in 3 greased pans.
