Place cabbage and onion in layers.
Boil vinegar, sugar, salt and celery seed for 2 minutes.
Remove from heat; add salad oil. Pour over cabbage and onion while hot.
Cover tightly. Refrigerate overnight.
Keeps for 2 weeks.
