In medium saucepan, put egg, butter, sugar, cocoa and vanilla. Stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil.
Pour this mixture over wafers that have been broken into small pieces. Press into greased pan and cool.
Add coconut or nuts for variation, if you wish.
