In a small bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk, vanilla and a few drops of food coloring (if desired), stirring until smooth. The icing should be fluid but thick enough to form a line when drizzled from the tip of a spoon.
If necessary, add a few drops of milk to thin or a little more sugar to thicken.
Makes about 1/2 cup.
