German Chocolate Cake is an moderately easy dinner. Made with 1 c. shortening, 2 c. sugar, 1/2 c. boiling water, 4 eggs, separated and 2 1/2 c. cake flour, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. An easy weeknight meal that comes together quickly.

Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water and set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add well beaten egg yolks.
Dissolve soda in 1/2 cup buttermilk and wait to add later.
Add remaining milk alternately with flour then add soda mixture, chocolate, vanilla and salt.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in 3 layers at 350Β° for 40 minutes.
