Fresh Apple Cake

Peel and coarsely chop apples into a large bowl.
Add sugar and let stand 10 minutes.
Sift flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice together.
Blend shortening and egg into apple mixture.
Add dry ingredients, stirring just until blended.
Fold in raisins and nuts.
Press into greased and floured pan (8-inch square); bake in moderate oven (350Β°) for 50 to 55 minutes.
Cool thoroughly on rack.
