Combine the sugar, butter and water in heavy saucepan.
Cook at 300Β° (to hard crack stage), stirring constantly without burning.
Add vanilla and pour into buttered 9 x 9-inch pan.
Lay 2 chocolate bars on top and spread them evenly as they melt. While still warm, sprinkle chopped pecans on top.
Cool thoroughly and break into pieces.
