Cream the first 4 ingredients.
Add buttermilk and vanilla. Sift flour and salt.
Alternate flour and salt with milk and vanilla into egg, shortening, sugar and cocoa mixture.
Add boiling water and soda.
Bake at 350Β°.
Makes 3 layers.
