Cream butter, brown sugar, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla and egg. Beat until light.
Add sifted dry ingredients.
Chill until firm. Chop dates.
Bring to boil with 1/3 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar and a dash of salt.
Simmer 5 minutes.
Add nuts.
Stir often.
