Crabby's Red Velvet Cake

Mix vinegar and soda in small cup; let stand until settled. Cream sugar, eggs and shortening until light.
Make paste of cocoa and food coloring in cup.
Add paste to shortening mix; add buttermilk and salt alternately with flour.
Add vanilla.
Add soda and vinegar mixture.
Beat well.
Bake in 2 (8-inch) round pans at 350Β° for 30 minutes.
Cool and cut each layer in half to make 4 layers.
