Put sugar, salt, soda and baking powder in a bowl; add buttermilk.
Stir well.
Then add cornmeal and flour alternately. Melt margarine in an iron skillet or baking pan in a 350° oven. Pour mixture in a hot pan or skillet and bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until light golden brown.
Best when margarine is melted on top while still hot.
