Cream shortening, butter and sugar with hand mixer.
Add eggs, one at a time.
Add vanilla, salt and baking powder.
Add cocoa. (If making plain pound cake, omit cocoa and increase vanilla to 2 teaspoons.) Add flour and milk alternately, ending with milk. Bake 1 1/2 hours at 325Β°.
