Boil cherries and sugar 3 minutes in a skillet.
Sift dry ingredients together; cut in shortening.
Mix milk, egg and vanilla together.
Add to the flour mixture and stir until moistened.
Add 2 tablespoons butter to cherries; drop dough mixture by spoonful into cherries.
Reduce heat, cover and cook for 18 to 20 minutes.
