Mix shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla well.
Sift together flour, soda and salt.
Mix all together.
Form into a roll about 2 1/2-inches across.
Wrap in wax paper.
Chill until firm.

Slice 1/8-inch thick.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes on ungreased baking sheet.
Makes 5 dozen.
