Sift together first 4 ingredients in bowl.
Add shortening, milk and vanilla to dry ingredients.
Beat with electric mixer on slow to medium speed for 2 minutes.
Scrape sides and bottom of bowl frequently.
Add egg whites.
Beat 2 more minutes, scraping bowl.
Pour into prepared pans.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes in a 375Β° oven.
