Boil the raisins and water until the raisins swell.
Take off stove and cool.
Cream together the shortening, sugar, eggs, salt, soda and vanilla.
Add cooled raisins and the flour.
Mix well. Pour into greased 3 (15 ounce) cans or 2 loaf pans.
Bake at 350Β° for 1 hour.
Nuts may be added.
