Beat eggs until frothy.
Add sugar and beat well.
Gradually stir about 1 cup milk into yolk mixture.
Add to remaining milk, stirring constantly.
Pour into top of a double boiler.
Bring water to a boil.
Reduce heat, stir constantly, until it reaches the thickness you want.
Stir in vanilla.
Serve warm or cold.
